State of Aging: 2009 State Perspectives on State Units on Aging Policies and Practices
Released November 19, 2009
NASUA has been analyzing and reporting on the state role in the evolution of home and community based services and supports for 45 years. This report, based on responses received from 52 states and territories, continues that strong tradition.
Key finding of this report reflect the diversity, not only of aging programming among the states, but of the population served within the states. States are grappling with financial pressures due to the economic decline and decreases in other sources of funding while successfully strengthening, enhancing, and expanding many of their aging programs and services.

National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, November 2009
November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. It is estimated that over 5 million people in the United States have Alzheimer's disease and over 10 million family members support and care for someone with Alzheimer's disease. It is unknown what causes this disease and currently there is no cure. This month is a time to raise awareness about the issue and to pay tribute to all of those with Alzheimer's disease, their caregivers and families, and to those who strive to find a cure.

National Family Caregivers Month November 2009
National Family Caregivers month is organized annually by the National Family Caregivers Association. This is a time to thank, support, educate, celebrate, and empower family caregivers across the nation. "Any given year there are over 50 million unpaid caregivers in the United States -- caregivers who dedicate their time and energy at no cost, providing services that would otherwise cost over $257 billion each year to the long-term care industry. As we honor our caregivers this month, we must also continue our commitment to support those who give of themselves generously so someone else may have a fulfilling life," said Irene Collins, NASUA's President.
