What is the National Family Caregiver Support Program?

The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) was enacted as part of the 2000 Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. The NFCSP is administered by the U.S. Administration on Aging through the national aging network. The aging network — comprised of 56 State Units on Aging, 655 Area Agencies on Aging and more than 25,000 local aging community programs — is in a unique position to reach caregivers in states and local communities across the nation. Through the NFCSP, the aging network offers a multifaceted program of caregiver supports that includes information, assistance, individual counseling, support groups and caregiver training, respite care and supplemental services. This comprehensive approach is aimed at serving two specific target groups - family caregivers and grandparents and older relative caregivers of children.
